Asbestos consists of six types of naturally occurring minerals made up of fine, durable fibres resistant to heat, fire, water and many chemicals. Once regarded as a wonder building material, it was widely used in construction from the 1950s to the mid-1980s. Any residential, commercial or public building built before 1990 may contain asbestos.
It was used in roofing, flooring, insulation, steam pipes, boilers, furnace ducts, soundproofing, decorative finishes and paints. Asbestos is carcinogenic; exposure can cause asbestosis, mesothelioma and other serious lung conditions.
When is professional action required?
If asbestos is worn or damaged, toxic fibres may be released and immediate remedial action may be required. Maintenance, refurbishment, extensions and demolition involving asbestos require a specialist removalist. Commercial buildings must maintain the asbestos records required by law.
